Achaemenica
An Encyclopaedia of the Achaemenid Persian Empire
Achaemenica is a scholarly encyclopaedia of the first Persian empire, the realm the Achaemenid kings ruled from Cyrus the Great to Darius III (550–330 BCE). It gathers what is known of that world, its kings and peoples, its cities and institutions, its religion, art and ideas, and the wars that made it famous, and sets out the evidence and the debates behind each subject.
It summarises and synthesises current scholarship, including recent work, as an accessible resource for teaching, study and general reading, written for students, teachers and the curious as much as for the specialist: synthesis that goes beyond a bare reference, not a repository of primary texts. Each subject is grounded in its primary sources, quoted and cited, and placed in the context of modern research, including the questions that remain open. The articles are revised as the scholarship develops.
